I know that republicans for the most part believe that government should not be the driver for many things; such as affordable housing, education, research and development, anti-poverty programs and etc. However, republicans who also argue that the marketplace is the champion of efficiency, can hardly argue that in order to fund life saving medical research, waiting for the whims of private charity would be the model of efficiency, that is crazy. I would like to see a republican try to explain how the might of the aggregate total of the American taxpayer dollars used to fund medical research would be a bad or an inefficient thing. Often it is the whole that is greater than the sum of its parts and republican ideology tries to eclipse that fact.
